Biography

Dr Adrian Turcanu is an Associate Professor at the School of Mathematical and Computer Sciences (MACS) in Heriot-Watt University Dubai (HWUD) since 2018. He is the Associate Director of Learning and Teaching and the Associate Director of Internationalisation at MACS Dubai.

His main areas of research are: mathematical modelling, statistical analysis and formal verification with a focus on bio-inspired systems and robotic mechanisms.

Prior to joining HWUD, Adrian was an Assistant Professor in the Mathematics and Computer Science department of University of Pitesti, Romania.

Adrian graduated both Mathematics and Computer Science undergraduate programmes at the University of Pitesti. Adrian completed his PhD in Computer Science at the same University as part of an European Union funded programme. His PhD journey included research collaborations with University of Dusseldorf, University of Seville, and Sheffield University.

Taught courses at HWUD: Foundations 1, Statistical Modelling and Analysis, Discrete Mathematics, Statistic for Science.

Research Grants and Projects

  • 2025 - 2028 CogWaters - 1.5 million AED; Co-Pi in research project Cognitive Architecture in Unmanned Surface Vehicle (USV) for Debris Collection (2025 - 2028). Project funded by Dubai Future Foundation.
  • 2021-2023 ESMS – 50000 AED – University of Wollongong + Heriot-Watt University joint fund. Member of the team investigating the 
    monitoring of mental disorders of the elderly with healthcare smart home systems using multimodal data.
