Informing strategy and advocacy at LumoTV, the UK's dedicated BSL television platform

Impact: Economic, Societal, Technological

Description of impact

Research commissioned by LumoTV informed their rebranding and audience engagement strategies. A second study is being used by LumoTV for advocacy with broadcasters to secure funding for their platform.

Who is affected

LumoTV as an organisation; the broader BSL-using Deaf community in the UK as beneficiaries of a sustainable, dedicated sign language broadcasting platform; UK broadcasters and funders engaged through LumoTV's advocacy work.

Narrative

LumoTV, the UK's first dedicated British Sign Language television channel, commissioned two studies from Kusters, Adam, and Napier to support their organisational development. The findings of the first study informed LumoTV's rebranding and audience engagement strategies. The second study has been adopted by LumoTV as an evidence base for advocacy with broadcasters, with the aim of securing funding to sustain and grow their platform. This represents a direct pathway from academic research to organisational strategy and policy advocacy in the BSL media sector.
