Narrative

Kusters's ethnographic films have been adopted for teaching across at least twenty confirmed users at universities in twelve countries. Ishaare: Gestures and Signs in Mumbai has been used at the University of Chicago, Columbia University, Carleton University, Oberlin College, Western Oregon University, Trinity College Dublin, Humboldt University Berlin, and Monash University. The MobileDeaf films have been used at Gallaudet University across multiple postgraduate courses in Deaf Cultural Studies and Deaf Mobilities, and by educators in Sweden, Finland, Denmark, the Netherlands, Australia, Ireland, Portugal, Czech Republic, and the UK. Uses span a wide range of disciplinary contexts, including interpreter training (Finland), Deaf studies (Canada, Ireland, USA), sign linguistics (Germany, Ireland), disability studies (USA), and international sign and mobility (USA). Films have been used with both deaf and hearing students, at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Several educators have noted using the films specifically because they are narrator-free and prompt student-led discussion. This list is based on confirmed contacts as of May 2026 and is likely an undercount of actual reach.
