Dataset: Marine plastic pollution undermines the livelihoods and income of fishing communities in Viet Nam

Dataset

Description

This dataset support the publication: "Marine plastic pollution undermines the livelihoods and income of fishing communities in Viet Nam". The dataset consists of three sub-sets of data:
- Dataset 1: Socio-economic Impact Survey: This dataset originates from a socio-economic survey conducted between March and April 2023, involving a total of 199 small-scale nearshore fishers in three coastal regions of Vietnam: Hai Phong City (HP), Nam Dinh Province (ND), and Ben Tre Province (BT). The data were used to calculate the socio-economic impacts of marine plastic debris on nearshore fishing communities in Viet Nam.
- Dataset 2: Validation Survey: This dataset originates from a validation survey using structured interviews with fishers (n=94) who were not participated in the previous Socio-economic impact survey (dataset 1). The survey was conducted in May 2024 to assess the extent of agreement or disagreement that fishers in the same studied areas had with the research findings based on Dataset 1.
- Dataset 3: Waste audit Survey: This dataset was compiled through field observations (n=282) conducted aboard research fishing vessels operating in nearshore waters of Hai Phong (HP), Nam Dinh (ND), and Ben Tre (BT) provinces. Data collection took place in two seasons (Dry season: 17th April to 30th May, 2024; Wet season: 1st August to 30th September, 2024), utilizing trawl nets and gill nets. The dataset records the weight of marine debris and marine plastic debris unintentionally captured in the fishing gear, providing valuable insights to validate the estimation of nearshore fishers, which was presented in the Dataset 1
