This course is lab-based, applying the Transition Engineering approach to a real-world wicked problem and developing a shift project to the proposal stage. Transition Labs at the Islands Centre for Net ZeroLinks to an external site. (ICNZ) will be ongoing during the course and students can participate in a range of activities in different activity ecosystems.

Transition Engineering is a systems approach, necessarily requiring knowledge of energy, and research into infrastructure, built environment, culture, environment and economics. The course addresses the mega-issues of unsustainable fossil energy and global warming. The course employs principles of sustainable energy, which primarily involves downshift of fossil fuel production and adaptation to reduced energy consumption.
