DescriptionDesalination is often seen as an inevitable answer to Middle East water scarcity. But as capacity scales, the bigger question is no longer whether the region can produce enough water — it is whether it can do so without locking in a major emissions and power-system burden. The shift from thermal plants to reverse osmosis is changing the cost and carbon math and advances in membranes, pretreatment and staged designs are cutting energy use further. The real inflection point, though, is integration: Solar, hybrid systems and even nuclear offer pathways toward net-zero desalination, but intermittency, storage and infrastructure constraints will determine how fast the transition can move.
