Can Sustainability Ever Be Mainstream?

Press/Media: Research

Description

Could “sustainability” be of any use for tourists waging towel wars on Mediterranean beaches? While scholarly approaches link sustainability with four themes, ecology, economics, politics and culture, relevant debates outside academia usually neglect culture. Such a broad definition is important, not only because it encompasses more issues, but also because ecological sustainability is not tenable, unless cultural changes that affect the environment are considered. Please join civil engineer Dr Elli-Maria Charalampidou and historian Dr Nikolaos Papadogiannis in discussing how to make sense of “sustainability” in all those fields by building on the examples of renewable energy and tourism.
