The Patagonian Geography Conferences (Jornadas Patagónicas de Geografía) have served as a long-standing forum for exchange, originally organised by the Departments of Geography of universities in Argentine Patagonia with the aim of strengthening institutional relations at a regional scale and fostering dialogue, debate and the development of new perspectives on territorial processes and challenges in the region. Over successive editions, the Conferences have evolved into a broader and more diverse meeting space, bringing together geographers and researchers from related disciplines from across Argentina and from other Latin American countries.During the meeting of Heads of Geography Departments held within the framework of the 10th Patagonian Geography Conference (Trelew, 2016), it was agreed to expand the call in order to consolidate the participation of researchers from Chilean Patagonia. As a result, the 11th Patagonian Geography Conference (Neuquén, 2018) was held jointly with the 1st International Congress of Argentine–Chilean Patagonian Geography. With the aim of continuing the biennial tradition of the Patagonian Geography Conferences, established in 1994, and consolidating the emerging International Congress, the Department of Geography of the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences at the National University of Patagonia San Juan Bosco (UNPSJB) and the Patagonian Institute of Geographical Research organised the 12th Patagonian Geography Conference together with the 2nd International Congress of Argentine–Chilean Patagonian Geography.
The event took place on 9, 10 and 11 November 2022 under the theme “Socio-territorial transformations, complexities and uncertainties”. This theme brought together key categories in contemporary Geography, reflecting a discipline constructed in—and about—territories that are being transformed and increasingly complex in response to economic, political, cultural and technological changes over recent decades.
The programme included an opening keynote by Dr Andrés Núñez (Institute of Geography, Pontifical Catholic University of Chile) entitled “(Post)human geographies and (de)territorialisation: reflections on the intersections of nature, culture and capitalism”; a space for short presentations of books and journals; and a roundtable on “Internationalisation, academic mobility and postgraduate education”, with contributions from Dr Lilliam Quirós (National University of Costa Rica), Dr Adriana Portella, Dr Juan Manuel Diez Tetamanti (CONICET–UNPSJB), Dr Myriam S. González (UNPSJB) and Dr Alejandro Monti (UNPSJB). The closing panel, organised around the theme of the Conference, featured Dr Santiago Bondel (UNPSJB), Dr Myriam González (UNPSJB), Dr Ana María Raimondo (UNPSJB), Dr Alejandro Schweitzer (CONICET–UNPA) and Dr Lilliam Quirós (National University of Costa Rica).
The event also included two workshops: “Social cartography: perspectives from Latin American experiences”, led by Dr Iliana Araya Ramírez (National University of Costa Rica) and Dr Juan Manuel Diez Tetamanti, and “Comprehensive Sexual Education (ESI): mapping the body as territory”, led by Prof. Fabiana Marino and Mg. Bianca Freddo (UNPSJB). In addition, seven thematic sessions were held, during which numerous papers were presented.
This volume publishes the extended abstracts of the papers presented within these thematic sessions, organised around the following axes: (1) Theory and methods in Geography and interdisciplinary studies; (2) Geography education and teaching and learning experiences; (3) Socio-territorial transformations and conflicts; (4) Population, mobilities and cultural identity; (5) Environments: processes, methods, complexities, risks and disasters; (6) Applications and information technologies in Geography; and (7) Geography in university outreach and knowledge transfer.
