Invited public lecture organised by the French Civilisation and Culture Group of Bath Royal Literary and Scientific Institution: Televising Charity in France: Les Restos du Coeur and Les Enfoirés, November 2014.
Chris Tinker will discuss the ways in which television, popular music and charity have combined in France over the last thirty years to produce the hugely successful annual benefit concerts Les Enfoirés in aid of the Restos du Coeur charity. Les Enfoirés takes its name from one of the insults /catchwords used by the comic Coluche, who launched Les Restos du Coeur in 1985. Chris will show how TV coverage of Les Enfoirés has contributed towards shaping representations of French popular-music culture, social identities and charitable activity in France.
