Description
The audience of approximately 50 people for the research presentation was diverse and engaged, reflecting the broad significance of the study's findings. The gathering brought together a strong cross-party political representation, with several MSPs in attendance including Emma Roddick (SNP) who delivered a powerful keynote speech, Alex Cole-Hamilton (Leader of Scottish Liberal Democrats), and Maggie Chapman (Greens), alongside Councillor Maureen Chalmers (SNP). This political presence underscored the cross-party commitment to equality issues. The audience also included MECOPP's dedicated board members and colleagues, whose passion and commitment to the organisation's mission was evident throughout the event. Representatives from other charitable organisations were present, demonstrating the collaborative nature of the sector and shared interest in supporting unpaid carers.
Most importantly, the audience featured unpaid carers themselves, particularly those from BME communities who are at the heart of MECOPP's work. These individuals brought invaluable lived experience to the discussion, ensuring that the research findings were grounded in real world perspectives. Their presence emphasised that this was not merely an academic exercise, but research with direct relevance to people's daily lives and experiences.
The mix of policymakers, practitioners, organisational leaders, and those with lived experience created a rich environment for meaningful dialogue about the health and wellbeing challenges facing BME unpaid carers, making it clear that addressing these issues truly is everyone's business.
