Taking inspiration from the UN International Year of Light 2015, we will be exploring how light engineering is opening up unknown and far-reaching possibilities. Scientists, engineers and technicians are performing cutting-edge research with light, using it to revolutionise communications, cure diseases and solve crimes. Our inspiring demonstrations and presentations include Dr Jonathan Leach from Heriot-Watt University, who can take images that show light travelling through air and has made a camera that can see around corners, and Dr Michael Wharmby of Diamond Light Source, the UK’s national synchrotron science facility and Javid Khan of Holxica, a high tech startup working on holographic 3D visualisation, who will explore the emergence and evolution of these highly complex machines.
