Embedding Sustainability as a Design Mindset: Integrating Principles Across Studio, Construction, and Materials Pedagogy

In design education, sustainability is often taught as a separate subject rather than as a core way of thinking. However, in architecture and interior architecture, sustainability should shape every design decision students make. This presentation will explore how sustainability can be embedded across the curriculum, not as a standalone module, but as an ongoing mindset that connects studio projects, construction knowledge, and material choices.
Drawing from experience teaching construction and design studio courses, the session will demonstrate how sustainability principles can be introduced progressively, reinforced through design briefs, and assessed through integrated learning outcomes. By aligning studio creativity with technical understanding and environmental responsibility, students begin to approach design challenges more critically and holistically.
The presentation will also discuss practical strategies for curriculum alignment, assessment design, and encouraging long-term thinking in students. The aim is to show how sustainability can move from being an additional requirement to becoming a natural and integral part of the design process, supporting both professional readiness and responsible practice.
