Between 6 and 16 November 2022, I participated as a climate change researcher in an international multidisciplinary expedition to Patagonia, focused on documenting the territorial, social, and environmental impacts of climate change and advancing comparative research on desertification and human resilience.My role centred on field-based climate research, including site visits to areas experiencing accelerated desertification and the drying of major lakes caused by long-term human-induced environmental change. I conducted and supported in-depth interviews with the remaining residents of the Bueno Pasto community (44 inhabitants), examining how climate change is reshaping living conditions, housing, livelihoods, and patterns of displacement. These encounters demonstrated that climate change is not an abstract academic concept, but a lived reality marked by water scarcity, loss of biodiversity, and forced abandonment of homes and productive land.
As part of the expedition, I took part in research coordination meetings linked to the “Center for Healthy Cities, Aging and Citizenship” project and actively contributed to the XII Jornadas Patagónicas de Geografía and the II Congreso Internacional de Geografía de la Patagonia Argentino-Chilena, presenting and discussing climate-related research with scholars from Brazil, Argentina, Uruguay, and Costa Rica.
I also engaged in institutional dialogue on climate research and academic cooperation, including a strategic meeting with the Rector of the Universidad Nacional de la Patagonia San Juan Bosco to explore bilateral agreements, staff exchanges, and joint teaching and public lectures on climate change. Through these activities, I actively promoted international research collaboration and capacity-building in climate change studies.
