Description
This activity is part of an assessment process for Level 2 Design, Engineering and Construction (DEC) students at Drummond Community High School. At this stage of their course, students are developing a feasibility study for a proposed project. Before moving into more technical design and detail, they present their early ideas to a panel of external professionals.The purpose of the panel is to give students real-world, professional feedback on their initial research questions, concepts and assumptions. This helps them understand whether their ideas are viable, relevant and appropriately framed, and allows them to refine, redirect or, if necessary, rethink their proposals before progressing further in the course.
My role in this activity is to act as an external examiner and professional panel member. This involves listening to short student presentations, asking constructive questions, and providing informed feedback based on academic expertise and professional experience. The focus is not on grading, but on mentoring and guidance, helping students to connect their ideas to real planning, design and consultation practices and to develop critical thinking, confidence and professional awareness.
This type of engagement strengthens links between education and practice, supports student learning, and contributes to meaningful collaboration between schools, universities and external professionals.
