Activity: Talk or presentationInvited talk

Description

Presentation of the British Academy-funded research project Amazon Indigenous Wisdom at the I Congresso Luso-Brasileiro: Direito, Justiça e Desafios Contemporâneos – Perspetivas Multidisciplinares, held at Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa.

MaeMekea Project – Amazon Indigenous Wisdom:

The MaeMekea Project, named by Indigenous leader Txima Kaxinawá of the Huni Kuin people, means “take care of the planet” in the Huni Kuin language. This British Academy-funded initiative is a transdisciplinary and intercultural collaboration between Indigenous communities and academic institutions in Brazil and the UK. Grounded in the ancestral knowledge of the Yawanawa, Noke Koi Katukina, Shanenawa, and Huni Kuin peoples, the project explores climate change through decolonial methodologies such as storytelling, GIS Yarning mapping, participatory filmmaking, and immersive fieldwork. MaeMekea amplifies Indigenous voices, critiques the exclusion of Indigenous epistemologies from climate governance, and proposes inclusive, community-led strategies for ecological justice and climate resilience
