    Description

Invited plenary lecture on Present-day lime binders. Abstract: Lime binders have been used in masonry for centuries. The development of Portland cement, with its superior setting and strength gain, even under water, led to a severe decline in the use of lime. However, several issues have contributed to a revival of interest in these traditional materials. Lime mortars are more flexible and better able to accommodate expansion and contraction in the masonry, and are additionally perceived as more environmentally friendly than cements. This talk aims to give a broad introduction to the features of lime binders, making reference to the currently available materials and to recent research, dealing with composition, fresh and hardened properties, and microstructure.
